The payment for December 2026 is due on January 1, 2027, which is New Year's Day, so it goes out on Thursday, December 31, 2026. That means no payment arrives in January 2027, and two arrive in December 2027 (on December 1 and December 31).
These dates follow the rule in the law. VA certifies payments "to the maximum extent practicable" on these dates, and your bank decides when a direct deposit shows in your account.
The rule behind the dates
Under 38 U.S.C. 5120(e), when the first day of a month is a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, VA pays on the Friday before a weekend, or on the weekday before a holiday (not a Saturday), even though that's still in the month the payment is for. The legal public holidays are the ones in 5 U.S.C. 6103(a), such as New Year's Day and Labor Day.
When the 2027 raise shows up
The yearly cost-of-living raise starts with the payment for December. If Congress passes the 2027 raise (3.6%, the same as Social Security), it first shows in the payment for December 2026, made on December 31, 2026. There isn't one in January. The payment for December 2026 would be due January 1, 2027, New Year's Day, so it goes out on Thursday, December 31, 2026. The next payment, for January, comes on Monday, February 1, 2027.
Why do I get two VA payments in December 2027?
The payment for November comes on December 1, 2027. The payment for December is due January 1, 2028, a Saturday, so it moves to Friday, December 31, 2027.
Does VA pay early when the 1st is on a weekend?
Yes. When the 1st is a Saturday or Sunday, the law says to pay on the Friday before. In 2027, that's April 30 and July 30.
Is VA disability paid for the current month or the month before?
The month before. The payment on February 1, 2027 is for January 2027.
